Summer Academic Program for At-Risk YouthAllen Metropolitan CME Church sponsored the Center For Academic and Cultural Excellence (CACE) during the months of June and July this year. This program was targeted at academically at-risk youth in the local church community and was implemented in response to a request by local school administrators. Due to budget cuts in Chicago Public Schools, the summer school program was not available to their students. The program was staffed by volunteers from the church which included retired and active school teachers.
Each week they were taken on field trips to the Lincoln Park Zoo, DuSable Museum and the Shedd Aquarium and the Chicago Field Museum.
The goal of the program was to enhance and reinforce the educational learning and growth of the student as well as to expand and introduce the student to the arts.
The program provided breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks for students and others who were in need of food.
